J24 Racing Parkstone 13th June 2016

Congratulations to team Flying Colours on a triumphant Spring Series.

The Summer series started last Monday but was abandoned due to lack of wind and a strong tide.

However, this Monday a nice healthy SW breeze allowed all 10 J24s a decent beat up to Balls Lake and a downwind leg rounding Northshore Homes. Twice round was the order of the day.

Madeleine showed the way followed by Jolly Roger, (welcome back from your foreign travels). Wijit's crew got Andrew out of a sticky situation and claimed third spot. (Just shows the value of testing one's spinnaker before the race)!

And, whilst only four up, and sporting a jib rather than a genoa, we, on Vinyl Solutions, can claim not to have finished last (for a pleasant change), well done Eve, Jenna and Ben !!

Hi from J24 fleet no. 43 in Casco Bay, Portland, Maine. USA

A short visit, for a family wedding, and a chance conversation over a beer one evening, culminated in an invitation to sail aboard J24 Bad Apple from Portland YC in Casco Bay, Maine last Wednesday evening.

                                                  

Team Bad Apple donned their layers of fleeces before we set off, for two short races just the other side of the island in view. Normally Bad Apple does well, in their fleet of 9 or 10 boats, but not on this occasion !! However, the cool box full of beers and sodas tucked under the companionway gave an indication as to the serious nature of the racing.  This, apparently, is their "chill out" evening to "de-stress" from a hard day's work. I must remember that next Monday. I hope the Nationals went well. Congratulations to Duncan and team Madeleine.

Monday 23rd May  Parkstone YC
A beautiful evening with first and outgoing then a speedy incoming tide coupled with a typical unsteady WNW breeze
kept the J24 fleet on their toes throughout the race.
Place changes were the norm rather than the exception and most boats seemed to have their moment of glory at the
head of the fleet (well not everyone !!)
Congratulations to the girls and boys onboard XP Rigging, a Westerly built J24, who achieved an excellent 3rd.

Two new entrants were welcomed to the J24 fleet on Monday. Pheonix, skippered by new class captain

Andy, proved their mettle, straight from the start they visited the Brownsea shore, picked up the renowned

Lift around the island and was first around the Chris Somner windward mark. Easy Tiger, with Jim and Toby

Martin on board, did the opposite, going right at the start and vastly overstood the mark.

As the wind shifted from SW to WNW the beat disappeared as did place changes. Nonetheless it was a very

Pleasant evening on the water.

J24s Parkstone Mon 9th May.

The story of the week goes to a recalcitrant Tactick compass which threw itself overboard from Jobs for the Buoys last Monday and was found enjoying a sunbathe on Sandbanks beach just 24hrs later. Duly returned to its owners, dusted down, fitted with a safety line, it took its pride of place for Monday's race.

However, it would have served its owners much better had it been an echo sounder, as team JftBs joined Wijit and new arrivals (welcome to the "boys" J24) XP Rigging on the mud, in a fierce outgoing tide, only minutes after rounding the windward mark in second place.

Meanwhile crew Madeleine woke up only one minute before the start to realise this was supposed to be a sailing, rather than a bare pole drifting, race, whilst we, on board Vinyl Solutions, had just prised ourselves off another sandbank to start a little later than desired !! All good professional stuff in the Parkstone J24 fleet !!

Sometimes it works in your favour to watch mistakes being made at the top of the fleet, and Madeleine took over first place which she never relinquished, and we overtook two stranded vessels.

Crackerjack continues to impress, taking another second place, and Zaphod, despite also finding the ground, finished a very creditable third. Obviously Phil's crew prefer the more gentler kind of sailing rather than the "survival" stuff of the last few weeks!
